Piacenza is a compact, authentic city of art, perfect for a weekend away from the crowds. In 48 hours you can experience the best of it on foot, with no need for a car. Here’s a tried-and-tested itinerary.
Day 1 — The historic heart
Morning
Start from Piazza Cavalli, the city’s living room, with its two bronze equestrian statues by Mochi and the Palazzo Gotico dominating the square. A few steps away you’ll find the Cathedral, a splendid Romanesque church from the 12th century: step inside to admire its frescoed dome.
Afternoon
Spend the afternoon at Palazzo Farnese, home to the Civic Museums, where you’ll find Botticelli’s famous Madonna and the charming Carriage Museum. Then stroll through the pedestrian area among shops and historic cafés.
Day 2 — Flavours and surroundings
Morning
Dedicate the morning to food: visit a local market and taste the three PDO cured meats — coppa, pancetta and salame piacentino. A glass of Gutturnio, the local red, is the perfect match.
Afternoon
Take a relaxed walk along the River Po or explore the streets around the centre. Before leaving, treat yourself to a typical first course such as pisarei e fasò in one of the town’s traditional trattorias.
Getting around
Everything is within walking distance: from Roma284 you reach the main sights in a few minutes. Leave the car behind and enjoy the city at a slow pace — that’s the real charm of Piacenza.
